چکیده

The ever-increasing energy consumption of data centers is becoming a crucial problem nowadays. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of coordinating dynamic server provisioning and thermal dynamics for energy control of data centers. A model predictive control approach, considering the computational and thermal characteristics of a data center and their interactions, together with dynamic server provisioning is used to optimize the energy consumption of the total data center. Quality of service and thermal constraints are enforced in the optimization process. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control approach can lead to a significant energy saving for a data center.

Dynamic Server Provisioning for Data Center Power Management

Data centers play an important role in today’s IT infrastructure. However, their enormous power consumption makes them very expensive to operate. Sadly, much of the power used by data centers is wasted because of poor capacity management, leading to low server utilization. In order to reduce data center power consumption, researchers have proposed several dynamic server provisioning approaches....

Performance and Provisioning Analysis for the Dynamic Rate Erlang-A Queue

The multi-server queue with non-homogeneous Poisson arrivals and customer abandonment is a fundamental dynamic rate queueing model for large scale service systems such as call centers and hospitals. Scaling the arrival rates and number of servers arises naturally when a manager updates a staffing schedule in response to a forecast of increased customer demand. Mathematically, this type of scali...

Effectiveness of Dynamic Resource Allocation for Handling Internet Flash Crowds

Internet data centers host multiple Web applications on shared hardware resources. These data centers are typically provisioned to meet the expected peak demands of the hosted applications based on normal time-of-day effects. Such an over-provisioning approach is not robust to flash crowd scenarios, where the load increase of some hosted applications is much higher than their expected peak load...

An Online Optimization-based Technique For Dynamic Resource Allocation in GPS Servers

Since web workloads are known to vary dynamically with time, in this paper, we argue that dynamic resource allocation techniques are necessary in the presence of such workloads to provide guarantees to web applications running on shared data centers. To address this issue, we present an analytic model of a server resource that services multiple applications using generalized processor sharing (...
